What is MESH?

In a world where academic freedom is increasingly under threat, MESH aims to stand as a beacon of hope for scholars who continue their vital work under challenging circumstances. We are an initiative dedicated to supporting academics who face restrictions on their research, teaching, and expression while remaining in their home countries. MESH was created in 2024 by Ferenc Hammer, a Hungarian scholar with the help of several institutions from Germany.

The aim

Our Mission

MESH aims to create meaningful connections across borders to ensure that no scholar has to work in isolation. We believe that academic freedom is fundamental to human progress, and that every scholar deserves the opportunity to contribute to global knowledge—regardless of their geographical or political circumstances.

What Makes Us Different

While many organizations focus on relocating threatened scholars, MESH recognizes that this isn't always possible or desired. We aim to provide innovative solutions for academics who stay in their home countries, offering two key services:

Secure Mentoring Networks

We aim to connect at-risk scholars with international academic partners through secure communication channels. These partnerships provide:

  • Professional collaboration opportunities
  • Academic resource access
  • Emotional and collegial support
  • Integration into global academic communities

Anonymous Publishing Platform (Under Development)

Our blockchain-based publishing system aims to enable scholars to:

  • Participate in international academic discourse safely
  • Maintain academic integrity through standard peer review processes
  • Publish under protected identities while ensuring proper attribution
  • Contribute to global scholarship without risking personal safety

FAQs

Supporting scholars at risk requires understanding. Here are some common questions about how MESH works to safeguard academic freedom through remote mentorship and secure publishing.

What is MESH?

MESH is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting scholars at risk around the world. We provide a remote mentorship network and secure publishing channels to empower these scholars to continue their vital work without fear of repercussions in their home countries.

Who are scholars at risk?

Scholars at risk are those facing threats to their safety, academic freedom, and ability to freely pursue research and teaching due to the nature of their work, their identity, or their peaceful exercise of human rights. This can include scholars experiencing silencing, intimidation, self-censorship, and other debilitating forms of repression in their home countries.

How does the MESH mentorship program work?

Through our secure network, MESH pairs scholars at risk with supportive academic partners in other countries. These mentors provide guidance, feedback, and a sense of community, helping the at-risk scholars to continue producing high-quality research and scholarship. All communication is kept strictly confidential.

What is MESH's anonymous publishing system?

Many scholars at risk cannot publish their work internationally due to the risk of retaliation in their home countries. MESH's blockchain-based publishing system allows these scholars to anonymously submit their work for peer review and publication, without revealing their identities. This protects them from potential consequences.

How can I get involved with MESH?

There are several ways to support MESH's mission:

  • Become a mentor and partner with a scholar at risk.
  • Contribute funding or resources to sustain our programs.
  • Spread awareness about the plight of scholars at risk globally.
  • Advocate for policies that protect academic freedom worldwide.
